The wind was playing April Fools' Day jokes today. Forecast called for 20-ish knots with a pop in the mid-afternoon but the pop came earlier and more than once. I was wary though because the wind seemed cold and unstable, with popcorn clouds in the satellite images. It was not one of those lovely afternoon westerly thermals! I launched a 12m comfortably and decided to take my Tiki for a spin but after two tacks I came in for my Duke b/c it was quite choppy which the Tiki can handle but that is not what it is for. On the Duke and I had a few good runs but I could see a squall coming across the water from Metchosin and it looked serious. I took it seriously and headed in, especially as I was on a bigger kite. As I got to shore the wind really came up. Fully de-powered, I left my Duke on the beach so I could have both hands on the bar as I went up the windward ramp. I know that the wind can increase at the leading edge of the point and that is exactly what it did. I started to feel the increased upward and downwind pull of the kite with the rock face in front of me. I didn't like the idea of punching out half way up the ramp but that is what I did. Happily, it all turned out okay ( but it could have been otherwise) and a fellow kiter quickly grabbed my flagged out kite as it dropped onto the grassy knoll. I got lucky today, and a huge thanks Tyler for grabbing my flagged kite! I am, was and remain humbled.
