Hi,

I am sick of not sailing for six months each year (Oct - Apr).

I am planning for a month off next Dec./Jan and will likely be at Hornby Island for a couple of weeks which gets the same SE wind as Columbia (except straight onshore to a sandy beach). Also I will be on a 3 day/week teaching schedule for the winter 08 term so maybe I can hit CB on my days off.

My question is what would be a good Columbia Beach board and 2 sail set-up for a beginner wave sailor?

For example, I see a new 2004 Starboard Evo 80L on eBay right now for $399US + $120US shipping. Any other board suggestions?

If you were to have a quiver of only 2 wave sails ....what sizes for CB sailing on winter days?....4.4M and 5.0M? Or 4.0M and 4.6M?

Not saying I am going ahead with this....just nice to think about.

If it were me I would just use the Huckers to save the bucks. However, if you have the means to purchase I would go with a 4.0 and a 5.0. I have an
'04 EVO (74 l.) and I really like it. It has been super tough and Has seen a lot of hate.
I was on Hornby on Easter weekend, and a strong Southeaster blew through. While I was biking along the Cliff trail, I spied the spit/sand bar next to the ferry. Looked like a wicked speed spot. I checked it out the next day and it could be really fun. The angle isn't perfect, but it was pretty flat on the lee side. Woth checking out. As well, that strait between Hornby and Denman was super filled in. Would be a wicked spot for soul sessions. Not anything epic , but fun bigger stuff ripping.

Remembering this is not Maui, and that CB gets big swell but never Mauiesque waves, the Huckers will serve you well. You might want a 5.2 & 5.8 Revo, so you can sail all the possibilities? A 5.5 seems good for me on the lighter wind days at CB....

just see how you like the huckers over the summer, the 4.2 and 4.8 are great CB sizes. you will jump higher than anyone! (Maybe get a very tough board )

A 4.4 and 5.0 Revo would do you well at CB, but like the guys have said, your Huckers may be just fine. The wave at CB is generally pretty forgiving (except for that last epic session ) and your Huckers will still work ok rigged flatter for waves. That's a fair bit of overlap you'd have with two Huckers and 2 Revos, but if you have the $ burning your wallet to ash, they would be nice to have. Or, you could buy a single 4.7 Revo and be set for most of the good days that CB has to offer while having the Huckers on standby. If you plan on getting a wave board to better suit your Huckers, A Starboard Acid with its fast rocker line will be a nice match. The Evo 80 would be a great CB board, but it's better suited to Revo-type sails in my opinion. At your weight the Evo 74 would be even sweeter. Sam Ireland has one (new 2006) for sale on coastalbc.com. It comes down to bucks and whether or not you care about redundant sizes in your quiver. I'm with DWD, the huckers will make your jumps at CB size XL.
