Hey Shark diver,

Have you flown a trainer kite yet? That is a good place to start! The winter conditions aren't the greatest to learn in as you will likely spend a lot of time in the water. IV is your best bet for learning if waiting till spring/summer is going to be hard for you. Strong Kiteboarding would be the place to contact for lessons. Nitnaht Lake is probably one of the better spots for lessons but its done for the year. Heading down to the beach and taking pics, helping to launch and land kites is the route of initiation. Can't tell you how many times I went to the beach and hung out all day and did just that.

As for buying gear I might hang off to see if you really like it. Take lessons, you will learn about the kites and be more informed on what to buy. I learned on my own with the help and advice from senior kiters, if I could do it over I would have ponied up for some professional instruction. It would have saved me some embarassment and I probably would have not wrecked my kite on the big stump at Nitnaht.

Exactly ... & consider a warm climate winter vacation in La Ventana , Dominican republic , Hawaii etc. ... I'm often at I.V. & happy to share the stoke with newbies. 8)
