Remembering Greg Caws (aka snarfer):
Greg has been an avid watersportsman since the early days of windsurfing in the 1980s. His first home on the west coast was a humble beach shack in Comox, where he would launch his windsurfer after work. As his passion for watersports grew, he purchased "Alisee" (43ft Beneteau) and eventually uprooted his family for a year-long cruise in the Caribbean. Back on land, his good friend Graham Norris (RIP below) introduced him to kitesurfing, he was instantly hooked then got his friend Harry Weiler to take up the sport and invest into Ocean Rodeo. Greg became a familiar face at favorite kite surfing spots like Clover Point, Cook Street, Nitinat, Port Alberni, and Baja Joe's in La Ventana.
In memory of Harry, Greg played a key role in setting up a webcam overlooking Ross Bay from Laurie's house (Harry’s widow), with support from Ocean Rodeo and the local BWD community. As wingfoiling emerged, Greg embraced the new sport with characteristic enthusiasm. He joined the Old Guys Wingfoiling group, bringing his trademark sense of humor and self-deprecation that made newcomers feel welcomed and comfortable. Greg's infectious spirit brightened the shore talks and endeared him to fellow enthusiasts.
Greg will be deeply missed by our community, leaving behind a legacy of passion, friendship, and maritime adventures. Rest in peace, Snarfer.
