Details | Warning: TLDR, LOL! Unicorn SC session! For as long as I've been coming to Tofino, I've wanted to ride the big, feathering, outside marauding swell that starts at the entrance to Cox bay and makes its way to the inside breaks like Rosie's, Cox, and of course SChesterman as it bends, folds and turns in. I was first out and solo for an hour on the big board and 1225 as the wind was a little lighter and I figured a higher volume board would lend a bit of safety in the lulls. Turns out the shorter mast, 1225 and big board were grossly outgunned by the meaty swell. Still, I had some exhilarating drops and exploded on a few, not being able to keep the foil down (a first on the 1225!). I came in for the Ginxu, long mast, and MA 1000 and headed back out. The swell just improved and increased in size as did the wind strength. Heading out into the middle of the bay, heart in throat, I started to tow into some giants. Once I was able to trust the foil set-up it was game on! At times it felt like dropping into a smooth, steep ski run with a huge area to turn and exploit the energy. The MA1000 matched the speed of the swell perfectly and never felt sketchy at speed. Made me wonder how the HA725 would have felt! By the end of the session I was dropping in at the mouth of Cox Bay out past/near Frank Island and riding all the way to Rosie's where the wave became a perfect peeling wall that tempted me to risk just one more turn before it would unload all of its energy. My last ride nearly ended in tears as I got completely worked after riding a wave too far inside and it closed out on my head. Miraculously no carnage, but I took 5 large waves on the head before making it to shore. Incredible that the wing survived! Best foil session yet for me and possibly my best windsport session ever. SO good. The foil was the tool for the day for sure, though the WS and kite crew were slaying the inside section and making it look super fun. I heart Tofino.
