I'm yet to experience the big summer NWers, but I've been told by one of the few resident sailors that you can launch off of the NE shore of Protection. Apparently there's a bit of a dead zone, but you cross the line a couple hundred metres out and it gets powerful. I hope to be at that confidence ...

batten replacement
Anyone know where one would source a 67 or so inch sail batten? Or something non-specialized that would provide the strength? It's old, wrinkly ass gear and I'm a learner, so it doesn't have to be fancy.

Me again. The areas freshest keener. Being at the "learning to waterstart" phase of things, is the South beach at Pipers a safe place to practice during a SE? Beyond 'gettin in other's way', is there any other safety info, or is this just a good old bad idea? I'd rather allow the lagoon to contain ...
