I will make that Nootka trip happen if I can BWD. Was there a few years ago with Vadardog and Gmac, and as some may remember, the trip involved great waves, a water taxi, a coast guard rescue and vomit. Things can get gnarly out there in a hurry. There is footage around of Jesse Brown and Brad Drummond at Beano Crk. from about ten years ago.

If anyone has a clue as to the forecasting and ability to get an updated logging road map (DWD??) then maybe we could try a fun trip up there.

As the resident Geographer I definitely could provide this. I actually have a full printed set for the entire island somewhere around here that I acquired through contracting work for Timberwest.

I was actually thinking of sailing around the bottom this summer and leaving our boat in Tofino for the late summer-fall-winter so we could go stay and surf, and explore the islands. From the sounds of the article BWD linked to 9 years ago, you can approach Nootka in the Lee and access the other side by road. It's not a big boat but if I did that it could certainly haul gear, then we have a small RIB That could be used to actually get to stuff.

It's all about time, and $$$.

last I checked, none of us are...do we have accumulated wind data for Solander (I seem to recall MF4 had some) and whatever else is in the area? SE in winter, NW in summer I assume? The aspect is wrong for a summer trip I am guessing.... Any data miners got a link? all I have found is this

i've spent a almost a week there the previous summer in late july...3 days in Mary Bassin and then 2 days in Yuquot/Friendly cove hopin for wind... but got unlucky with wind once there...had sun & NW15to 28knts every day sailing down the island but fogged in once we got to Nootka area... I think spring or fall might be better.

I think you can/could windsurf the beach right in (walking distance from anchorage) Yuquot/friendly cove, while there the light nw wind and waves were liningup ok, but nasty shore break, since rocky pebble and rapid steep drop.... the problem is getting from Yuquot to Beano Cr area...dinghy on the logging road is not efficient (unless you make friend with a native with a pick-up!? but the native already charge 15$ per day/per head just to set foot on Nootka in Yuquot and see their campground and church!??), by waterway it's about 8nm/roughly 1 hr with quite exposed shore and open seas (with a 12' zodiak & 20hp honda in mellow condition/read non windsurfing conditions). Anchoring at Beano cr area is open roadstead.

the nice thing, is once you have your sailboat in Tofino, it's two easy 25nm day to get around Estevan point (tofino-Hesquiat/hotspringcove 25nm & hesquiat-Friendly cove 25nm or one full day/+/-52nm).

I windsurf Brook's peninsula south side (beach west&next to Columbia Cove anchorage)...on that day Solender was foggy (less than 1 mile vis) NW42 gusting 47, the fog line would break at top of mountain range and we had sunny 25celcius and light sw wind in am on south Brook veering to nw10-20knt side-offoffoffoff and small waves, did some 5.8m wavesailing in caribean setting and daughter was swimming, while Solender was getting worked less than 7miles upwind!!!!?......windsurf came to a halt when another dinghy came to tell me my boat was dragging anchor and endedup with rudder jackup on a rockreef.....Brook/Solender is crazy weather but don't underestimated Estevan as local would say...

i'm bringing the boat south(baja, central Am etc...) this summer, may i propose a annual BWD fundraiser for the site...a week 4-5 winddude on the boat charter proceed going to the site...!?

I am more curious about the north side of the peninsula since there is actual road access. It is more realistic to actually get this off the ground and also have supplies etc.. Solander is right in line for SE with Side Bay and Lawn Point has serious NW side off potential if you look at the topography, much like Cape Sebastian. I will inquire with those I know that have ventured there before.

Whatcha mean by the last bit, Frank? Fundraiser and you'll have everyone who wins on your boat as long as they bring the rum?
