In the blog Dr. Mass asserts, ".. the figure below (from the UW Climate Impacts Group) demonstrates that much of the warming occurred before 1940, prior to significant effects of human emissions of greenhouse gases."

I think this is misleading. If you look at this page (N.W. Temperature, Precipitation, & SWE Trend Analysis):

and do a temperature plot from 1950 to 2010 (see the legend icon on the left) to interpret the red dots) that is clearly not the case. From 1895 to 1950 there is a mix of blue and red. From 1950 - 2010 it's all red and the changes are significant.

any arguments to suggest this ain't happening....are sinking or sunk....hopefully the "big $$, lasting jobs, and all things good" promise of the northern fracking, tar sands and the pipeline from big oil/gas with energy boards and politicians in their back pocket will follow suit BEFORE we destroy what's left of northern water resources and the miraculous west coast

Not to mention Canada is the last of the big resource countries to promote coal use by increasing exports....even the US isn't doing that.... Hey, I got an idea....let's step up our asbestos export business to the 3rd world some

Since these fossil fuel resources certainly are finite, hasn't anyone thought of investing in the future?? I mean we do it with everything else, don't we? Save for the future? Why do we think harvesting it all NOW presents a bonus for the future.....and all the money leaves the country? But what if the resources are still there with better extraction methods when everything else is used up? What a huge present for our children and their children to harvest sustainably!

Kus: if we wait too long to sell those fossil fuels, there might not be a market to buy it, and we'll have denied ourselves the profit. The unluckier parts of the world either will be too unstable to buy it or there will be real controls on fossil fuel trade. Best to sell it while we can still !

is also bogus because the industrial revolution started burning coal in the mid 1700s, and by the last quarter of the nineteenth century, coal fired steam engines, electric generators, and steel making was using huge amounts of coal over large parts of the world. YEs, the 20th century saw internal combustion engines explode in numbers, but humanity has been contributing to the buildup of CO2 well before 1940 even if it didn't seem to be having much of an effect till recently.

It's hard to stay positive. Even if we solved the Fossil Fuel problem we still have the bacteria-like human population growth to contend with. Oh - and shitty self centered human nature that will likely prevail as long as we do.

The saving grace is that we likely won't be here long. Just an eye blink in geological terms. I'd suggest humans are an evolutionary failure...too much brain for our own good. The world will get back in balance without us. So enjoy your fun times while you can! :-)

That is a pretty broad generalization. Just like anything, there are good, bad and indifferent. The biggest trouble with being a politician who actually makes change for the good is that it isn't conducive for keeping your job when the majority of the public votes based on short term benefits instead of long term sustainability. Ie. corporate taxes are so low right now meanwhile important programs go underfunded.
