Stripped footstrap insert

Post by winddoctor »

Stripped footstrap insert solutions, anyone? Larger diameter screw is one but not ideal. First time this has happened to me in a bajillion years of using straps. I was due I guess.

Thanks for any tips!

I think weed eater line as a spacer may work.

Dry it out. Pour in any type of epoxy (JB-Weld will work great). Re-drill smaller than screw. Screw back in. Easy-as.

Weed eater line does work if it's not completely trashed.
Or else I put a toothpick in then fill with thickened epoxy (graphite powder works well).

Sorry that I don't have a clever answer but I'm wondering why a larger screw is not the best solution to the problem, given the hassle of replacing it and the strength requirement involved.

I'm guessing the answer is, "because you first gotta find the new screw!"

I wouldn't trust a weed eater line with a 1225 and 93.5 mast whipping around on big wing airs. Imagine a front strap busting off mid front loop. That's a retirement air.

I'd pick a different hole. Ideally running the footstrap longer. Still fill the stripped hole with epoxy though in case it's cracked.

Armstrong straps come with the largest diameter screws I've seen, they're actually too big for most boards. JB weld is a soft cured epoxy, which might help it not crack free from the insert hole if you did want to reuse the hole. Fill, drill to 3/16", then heat up an armstrong screw with a blow torch and screw it in once and leave it.

Yeah, lots of leverage on those inserts! Thanks.

because you may crack the insert and then have water leakage...also ensure not to go even a smidgen too long with a new screw if you go that route....

I'd use another screw hole myself enlarging the strap, if that doesn't work get a new insert epoxied in...
