Does anyone have info on Chilko Lake

Post by warmwindynights »

I may head up to Bella Coola end of august and was wondering if anyone here has windsurfed on Chilko Lake. I recall an afternoon wind kicking up but can't remember if it was suitable for a short board.

Fantastic place, often windy enough for shortboard from what I know. An alternative windy spot with warm(er) water and increadible white sandy beach is Choelquoit Lake (locally known as Big Eagle Lake or just Eagle Lake) to the east (Google Earth it). Anahim Lake is also often windsurfable, though most reliable in the spring.

Stay away from Tatlayoko Lake - fresh water sharks abound, and 4' leaches... :) Seriously, in the right weather, the best FW sailing I've seen on a lake, with a +2 km reach. Cold water, big even swells and 4.0 on a windy day. Thermal winds can blow either direction, but are best for inflow from the coast. Safe as well, as the end of the lake is similar to Nat and will act as a catchers mitt for 'bad days'. I may end up there in a few weeks!

Cheers,

Chris :)
