Mysterious creature lurking in Vancouver Island lake
Last Updated: Sunday, September 20, 2009 | 4:40 PM PT
The Canadian Press

Researchers aren't saying they've found a monster, but they do say they believe something big is lurking in a small lake on Vancouver Island.

The researchers spent Saturday probing the depths of Cameron Lake, about 180 kilometres northeast of Victoria.

At least six people have reported seeing something unusual swimming in the lake.

The team was using a fish-finder Saturday when researcher John Kirk said they detected something big, but their underwater camera became detached and they couldn't continue.

Kirk said because of deteriorating weather, the team won't be able to resume their search until next summer.

Kirk speculates the mysterious lake creature could be a giant sturgeon, a huge eel or a massive salamander.

Speaking of Cameron lake, do people Windsurf/Kite there? The two times I have driven past it, Alberni wasn' quite blowing enough, Nitinat was shut down, all other island locations had no wind, but I stopped and walked to the shore of Cameron lake and it must have been blowing a solid 20 down the center. Nice clean clear water too boot!

I suppose the monster explains the lack of wind riders present.
Don't forget to bring a towel!

Lots of other threads on Cameron, its a bit gusty but often seems sailable. (After the Gorge on/off/on/off winds this summer, the gusts at Cameron probably are quite reasonable, we are just spoiled by the Nat and Gordos).

considering they called off the 'expedition' due to 'deteriorating weather' (ie bomber high pressure) i bet its blowing right now.
get on it but watch out for sketchy big fish!

I was SUP'ng there a couple of weeks ago in glassy, warm water. I was telling Steph that I thought I felt a giant salamander licking my toes each time I fell in but she wouldn't believe me.
