Do we want to hold a fundraiser at the Yacht Club, and possibly have them put on a kite race/ competition for us next summer??

Fundraiser Venue/ Kite & windsurf Race

Post by skywalker »

Folks,

A few of us have been talking about hosting a fundraiser and movie night this year.

It looks like the Royal Victoria Yacht Club would like to help out and offer their venue for this. They have also indicated they may want to host a kiteboard/ windsurf race & competition for us next year.

They have the safety boats, and course bouys etc needed to host a race. And plenty of race organizing experience. All in all a very friendly crowd who is interested in learning more about our sport.

I think they have a great venue, and the possibility of a kite race in Victoria is exciting.

What do you think?

Luke

Hey Luke,
Having the RVYC host a kite race is a huge step in the development of kite racing in BC. San Francisco and Squamish have embraced the relationship between sailers and kite surfers with big benefit for the kite racing world. Being associated with a sailing club may well be required if we want to race at the Olympic level (plus sailers really know how to drink). I have some friends at RVYC that might help out. I will do whatever I can to help. Great work!!! :D :D :D

Very cool!! I think it is high time that Victoria gets their own events on the map :!: and having an established organization backing this is awesome. I would also check with my suppliers to see if they want to be part of this for additional (windsurfing) sponsorship. Suggest tho that race timing in unpredictable winter months is maybe a bit of a stretch....if it must be so, it seems apart from Xmas week, first week of January seems the most reliable for a ripper

Thanks for the encouragement KayakDoc & KUS!

To clarify:

Winter- Fundraiser
Summer 2012- race and competition

And thanks for offering your help. Please do let your friends know, I hope to hear from everyone here.

The first step is to have a fundraiser at the RVYC. With everyone under one roof, we can plan and get everyone stoked.

The available dates for the fundraiser are Nov 11th (Friday, public holiday) or Dec 4th (Sunday)

Any preference?

I'm happy to help out with a BWD fundraiser [both donating some $$ and my time if you need any help]. I'm headed to La V for a couple months at the end of Nov so I'd be up for an event date prior to that... 8)

Not a dumb question at all:

Some people have approached me suggesting that we make this for the Cancer Society in honour of Russian Dood (you've seen the forum posts i'm sure)

Some people have suggested keep it to BWD

So I suggest the planning committee who meet this weekend figure it out

Mabye a split? I don't know.

COME this weekend and help plan!

Thanks Sandy.

Also as a personal note, to those people that vote no to the kite/ windsurf event next year-

please pm me and let me know what concerns you have. Just want to get a clear understanding of all the stakeholders needs.

This community has a few naysayers no matter what you propose, wouldn't let it dampen your spirit. It is actually a good sign that some people aren't too apathetic to even vote at all :D

It'd be good to have a bit of an agenda tho:

-launch location/permits/windstats & dates, tides/classes/format/sponsors/tools & equipment, sourcing/parking & unload/food & drink/advertising/rescue & first aid/

I'm sure the wind(kite)fest members could offer up volumes of good input. As for a more reliable location, Gordon's is probably a better bet tho, sadly not as much parking/access/publicity. Even IV would be great on a late spring SE and for venue space that would be hard to beat.
