New board for 2013
New board for 2013
Hey,
So I'm just sitting here in the 'Wack depressed cause no sailing until May....though ski season is about to hit!
I have sold 3 boards since the summer (142L JP Freerace, 94L Goya One, 83L JP Wave),.....kept my 120L Fanatic Hawk for Harrison. I have been working every weekend this fall doing extra teaching so decided to reward myself.
After mucho research I have put a deposit down on a new board for 2013....I took Tempy's advice who said just to buy the one perfect sized board that you will use the most. I really wanted something I can use anywhere, including Nitinat/Gorge (or even the Coast - nanmoo!) with the following sails: 4.2, 4.7, 5.3 and even 5.9.
I wasn't sure that I would get enough use out of a Quad board but I still wanted something sexier than a single fin.
Here it is........sweet blue color (see pic below)......thoughts?
2013 Fanatic FreeWave 85L in the Team Edition
238cm x 58.5cm
Sailsize: 4.2 – 6.5 m²
It can be ridden as a single fin or a tri-fin. Board comes with two 11 cm MFC slotbox side fins and one 19 cm MFC centre powerbox fin.

Per Fanatic:
The Team Editions are made with Innegra Carbon, a new material for Fanatic, will be used on the 2013 Wave- and TE Freestyleboards. This material is lighter and more impact resistant than Carbon Kevlar, which was used until now on all TE boards. Combined with a double PVC / Wood Sandwich and Wood / Carbon heel reinforcements, it guarantees the most efficient construction in terms of light weight with maximum impact resistance.
All these models are produced with the Light Finish look, were the primary board color gets mixed into the laminating resin, for extra weight reduction.
FREEWAVE Team Edition
Shaper Sebastian Wenzel’s perfected a range of smooth-sailing compact styles, now upgraded with thruster fin setups for extra wave performance! The optimum blend of speed and carving, slashing and sliding make these our most versatile shapes. Tucked rails, rounded noses, and an ingenious CAD-created rocker line unlock the secrets of early-planing, control and top end.
Starting in 75 litre and also in 85, 95, 105 and 115 sizes the smaller models excel in surf and high winds, while the larger styles focus more on low-end, freestyle and blasting performance, yet are versatile enough for waveriding too. The TE and TeXtreme® versions are truly convertible shapes supplied with 2 SlotBoxes and one Powerbox for easy adaption to suit the conditions - all with exclusive Maui Fin Company G10 thruster fins. (SlotBox covers are also supplied for efficient singlefin cruising). The TE also comes in singlefin Powerbox model in 115. All sizes are available in Custom Wood Sandwich light in Powerbox singlefin only with US box singlefin on 75l version.
KEY FEATURES:
- Tri-Fin convertible setups on TE/TeXtreme® sizes for extra wave performance
- Modern short round-nosed shapes for balance, acceleration and easy riding
- Wide point forward of centre to 70° pintail
- High entry rocker, short flat section and optimum tail kick for control and speed
- Enhanced TE and TeXtreme® constructions with superior Innegra Weave replacing Kevlar layups
- Original Maui Fin Company G10 Thruster fins for ultimate quality
FANATIC'S CAD MASTER SHAPER SEBASTIAN WENZEL:
“These are the most adaptable, fast and easy-to-turn shapes I’ve ever produced... We’ve picked-up so many test wins from this proven CAD-formed scoop rocker line and straight V combination. This year we tweaked the box placements and added sidefins for pure Thruster convertible fun, the best of both worlds in performance Wavesailing or flat water pleasure. The smooth nose and entry kick helps riding and carving and the flat spot between the straps and tuned tail release makes them easy to control in freeride, freestyle or waveriding modes – it’s hard to think of how more versatile they can get!”
FreeWave TE 85, Planchemag 2012
“…Incredibly fast and explosive in a straight line as in the surf, this is a very responsive wave board perfect for those looking for speed and early planing....”
FreeWave TE, Boards UK Winter 2012
"... In our opinion it´s a great step forward in evolution. Multi-fins have become commonplace in wave boards these days... Essentially they have reduced the gap between dedicated waveboards and freewave boards, and they have done this without adversely affecting the characteristics that made freewaves so popular in the first place. It seems to be a winwin situation...."

Should be a good one board solution, much like the 85L Quad I ride for pretty much everything from 4.2-5.3. You'll probably find that the tri-fin set up keeps it far more planted through mega chop than your single fins, but when YOU COME to the coast this summer, it'll really shine.
Don't forget to bring a towel!
New board is in the 'Wack
A few of you have been asking for pics/cost of my new ride.....here is the new 2013 85L Fanatic FreeWave.
Last year I sold my JP Wave 83 for $800, my Goya One 94 for $850 and my JP FreeRace for $400......
I paid $1,899US from Gorge Surf Shop (put a deposit on last fall for 1/2). At the border I declared it and just paid GST/PST tax on $1,099 after claiming my $800 exemption. No duty was charged.
Useful to drag a kid with you when you are buying two boards = two $800 exemptions.
I have had a few Fanatics before. But always the regular versions. This is my first Team Edition and I am very happy. The Team Edition Fanatics are so so nice.
This FreeWave is a really cool dark blue colour on the bottom....I hear this makes it hard for sharks to see you from below.
The Tri fins look great (Maui Fin Co....19cm powerbox center fin and 11cm Futures thrusters), and it is very easy to put in the side plugs to make it a single powerbox fin for Nitinat.
Just wish I was in sailing shape. Hoping to get it over to Nitinat soon.

New boards
So,
I had 4 days at Nitinat on my new board(s)....I do have both the 2013 FreeWave Tri 85L and 105L.
Initial feedback. Very easy to sail. Fun.
Day 1: First day was on 5.9/105L and I used the single fin option. Mast base forward at 135cm. I sailed it with outboard straps and 2 back straps.
Great board for mowing the lawn at Nitinat (going back and forth).
Days 2 - 4: Windier. Removed the back strap and went single footstrap at the back on the 105L and 85L. Moved front footstraps inboard. Moved mast base smack in the middle (130cm from tail) and installed the tri-fins (center fin 20cm and two 12cm thrusters on the 105L and 19cm center fin and two 11cm thrusters on the 85L). What a difference. You lose a bit in speed and pointing ability with the tri fins, but sailing is just way easier and more fun. With inboard straps and smaller fins I stood more upright on the board, but it was easier to sail and jibe. I used various combos of 5.3 and 4.7 Gurus on both the 105L and 85L. Also tried the 105L with a 4.7. This was a real blast - big board + small sail while most people were on 5.0 - 5.5. Still lots of planing ability but with the tri fin set-up the 105L board did not feel too big for the 4.7.
I really liked having 2 identical boards of different sizes....as you can keep the same sail size and just move down in board size when it picks up a bit.
