Looking for island kiting knowledge/info
Hey guys,
Seems like it is the season for swell on the island. I haven't been out your way yet but plan to come up this weekend/next week. What are the better kite spots to ride the surf (launch/wind/wave/minimal surfers...). Things to watch out for, in the water, wind behaviour, no kite zones.
What weather station names/sites are you guys using for wind reports/forecasts and swell reports (buoy?) and swell forecasts?
I would really appreciate your advice.
Thanks,
Guilly

WIKI heading, top right there are precious few true wave spots and they are rarely windy so planning a week ahead for a strong NW is pretty optimistic

As Kus says, South Island spots with both wind and surf are few and far between. Rarely work and when they do, lots of ... competition.
If you aren't extremely flexible on timing, probably have a better chance to score in Tofino/Long Beach. And maybe even more likelihood on Oregon coast, if you're a mainlander...more wind, less ferry cost, more driving time, but can do that when it is dark.

cool thanks for the advice.
Funny, I was actually bouncing between the idea of Oregon coast and the island, sounds like the coast might be a better bet overall than the island. Anyways, both don't look too good for upcoming weekend/week, I guess I'll keep an eye on both this winter.
As for forecast I'm used to Unysis and ADDS forecast wind maps and they cover most of North America, I assume they're still reliable for the island.

I don't know those maps, but the forecasts page here is amazingly accurate for island spots. Tofino a little iffy, seems to call a lot more wind than actually happens. East side of the island can have wind swell "surf" that is pretty decent too....not real ocean swell, but fun for sure.Guilly wrote:

However, if you have potential for Oregon....that's the go! Especially if you have surf/sup as backup plan.
