Barrel nuts are used to hold some furniture together, you may find them at a specialty fastener stare ( don't know of one in Victoria, in Vancouver the place to go for exotic fasteners was Pacific Fasteners in Burnaby - http://www.pacificfasteners.com/ )

Stainless steel may not be available, but maybe in brass.

If they're that commonly used (i'd never seen them aside from in fins) Fastner Force @ rock bay & hillside would be worth giving a call.

Ikea uses them in some furniture too. Home Depot has them for cheap crap steel ones/immediate fix, stainless/brass use windance, sorry may have a spare but not near em. Try also capital iron big stainless dept
