China Creek, near Port Alberni conditions

Post by Sandy Beach »

~ taken from the message board

Sandy Beach: We agree! Thanks, Nanmoo. I message Nicole (Girlonaboard) regularly to find out if the thermals have started at CC. Most days, they start around noon, like Nitinat. Water at CC is brackish, like PA and Nitinat, and similar water temperature of Nitinat. We are hoping to work with PAPA (China Creek) over the off-season (along with Girlonaboard) to support and improve infrastructure at CC for wind sports ie. wifi, anemometer, webcam, etc. Apparently, it's part of the PAPA's 'strategic plan' to attract more water/wind sport recreational campers. Thanks to South Port Kiteboarding Community, who recently paved a solid foundation/relationship with PAPA on the HQ kitelaunch, since, it's the same authority, who manages China Creek. And, many things with CC are different than in the 80's, when it was a windsurfing destination (no day-use or launch fee now). We will likely set up our motorhome for the season at CC next summer (next to beach) and kite/windsurf/SUP, literally from our doorstep. - Tuesday August 23, 7:07PM

Nanmoo: It'd be great if they had a anemometer there. A lot of the time NN is windy but Alberni HQ shows nadda and I wonder if CC is working. - Tuesday August 23, 6:06PM

Sandy Beach: I'll add all this to a forum topic (instead of the message board) once I'm back on a laptop - Tuesday August 23, 5:29PM

Sandy Beach: Yup, South Port Kiteboarding launch at Harbour Quay marina (in town) is operational and getting some use (afternoons/evenings). China Creek is 9km down the Alberni canal (20min drive on logging road towards Nitinat from PA), and it's where our local kiteschool (Girlonaboard) is set up. They get the daily thermals before PA (like Nitinat does). We are loving the ease of camping, kiting, windsurfing and it's getting to be a growing hub for our wind community here. Lots of familiar faces. Another alternative to Nitinat for us! A growing number of launch spots along the Alberni inlet is exciting, and has always been the vision for the area. There's over 24 spots on the Columbia River Gorge ;) - Tuesday August 23, 5:27PM

Nanmoo: Is no one using the in town launch anymore? - Tuesday August 23, 5:11PM

Skywalker: Isn’t China Creek in Nimpkish Sandra? Long drive. - Tuesday August 23, 4:50PM

Sandy Beach: Heading back for camping at windy China Creek (20min from home). So nice to have wide open spaces, feel relaxed about leaving gear on beach, hot showers and flush toilets. Stoked about all the people we know taking lessons with Nicole and the Girlonaboard team. Great to see how helpful, curtious and encouraging the Port Authority (staff) and other campers are towards the wind community at China Creek campground. For us, it's a nice alternative to Nitinat. - Tuesday August 23, 3:46PM

Sounds like and interesting spot and there are some pictures and more info here:

I heard of it as a windsurfing spot decades ago and have driven past the turnoff, but have never been down. Its now on my 'to-do' list. :D
