Got lucky today. Skipped out of work early for my first 2005 session in northern waters. Very steady wind.....not what I expected. Started off in the rain then the sun came out. I love this place! :D

Wow!!!! :o This was one of the biggest days I can remember sailing here. The shore break was so big I couldn't come in for a break. Big air but hard to keep board on water. 4.7 a little big. Everyone else went to JR - glad I didn't since this was big enough!! Totally sore all over. Great chest high sets at Muir but didn't get up there.

The lagoon was protected from the wind and waves except out much farther(I wasn't planing on the inside when I first went out). As the wind filled in closer to shore I moved in closer to my launch site. I should have been on smaller gear but I love the speed and prefer to stay out of the cold water between the gusts. By 5 o'clock the wind speed was up near a steady 27 knots at the beach. The wind was too much for the gear I had rigged but I was way to tired to rig and derig.

Wow  The last time I was intimitated by windsurfing conditions was Florence, OR about 3 years ago. JR on a big day creates respect. Definitely pushed the limits of my skills and courage. Had a fun session on the 5.0. Then, rigged up the 4.0 and went out for two more sessions. A couple of good rides on the 4.0. Lots of pointing to regain ground. Best rides of the day by BWD and Graham. Nice work :!: Thanks to RDood for the jacket when I was taking pix at the point. I'll post some photos t ... (more)

The day started by me telling Morewind we might only get 3-4ft waves and 20kts out there. Well we got 2x that. Rigged the 4.5 first and got a nice hour of fantastic wave sailing. Then it nuked and we all rigged 4.0's. It was comfy at first then it got a little crazy. It's hard to wave sail when you can't sheet in. Some nice jumps and one huge scary wetsuit soiler wave ride - it looked like it was mast high and I sort of rode it, but mostly ran away.

We need more days like this (10 knots less next time plea ... (more)

Squirrely day at Esquimalt. Showed up at 1:30 and it looked about 5.0 but a bit gusty. I rigged a 5.4 and by the time I hit the water it had dropped to about 12-15 knots. Went out anyway and slogged to the wind. PLaned underpowered for about an hour. HAd a couple good jumps and jibes in the puffs but mostly underpowered. Spent most of the time trying to get back upwind to my van so I could rig my 6.0.

At about 3:00 the wind totally shut down and I was stuck way offshore and way downwind. I eventually dr ... (more)

I'm green with envy for the JR boys, but Kook put it on nicely for a while. Waited for nearly an hour for the wind to pick up for the 5.0. Sailed for an hour or so maxed out. Rigged the 4.0. Still felt huge in the big puffs. The reef was going off like I've never seen, and huge overhead ramps were to be found on the outside. VERY gusty. Had some very big jumps and a few fun forwards. It's been a while since I sailed in conditions like that! Good day.

Wimped out of dawn patrol, but got an OK session just before sunset. Wind was up near 20 as I rigged, first couple of runs powered, but then it dropped, planed in gusts, slogged the rest. Made one almost-planing gybe, a couple of OK ones, one nearly a slam jibe, managed to push the board around with my feet (and its big!). Practiced some clew-first sailing, easy with a big chop to help get momentum. Only sailboard, at least a dozen kites.

Finally spun a forward around to my back with my feet in the straps and super stoked! Wind died off, we had a beer, told some stories, watched everyone pack-up and leave, and three hours later the wind and swell picked up again and BWD and I rigged a little bigger and had another fun hour on some nice smooth waves. Watched a poodle terrorize the spectators in their cars at the beach. Eagle nowhere to be found. Darn. Paul L's quote of the day regarding breaking an ankle after a forward (years ago): "Once you're in shock, everything's fine." A Gooood Friday indeed. Big board and small sail worked well until the wind dropped. Tried some vulcans, back loops, hoss etc. Temperature sure dropped in the afternoon.
