My return to RB after hot sunny tropical climes. Rigged up the 4.5m as it looked windy, but suspiciously like tidal chop white caps and maybe not so much wind induced. Turned out to be a good call, think I would have been seriously undergunned on a 4m or smaller and my smaller foil. Initial reactions were "it's cold" quickly followed by back to back kelp smack downs heading upwind into the glare and tidal crap lines. Once I figured out where the tide line crap was and the new growth kelp forests I ... (more)

Unbeknownst to me I arrived to the peak and rigged the 4m. Had fun playing in the mixed up small swell and increasingly light shifty wind. Fun to get out mid week after a short hiatus. Felt it dropping below 4m levels and milked it in.

Three, maybe four conversing swells. A serious current and wind blowing SSW, SSE, WSW or all of the above :) Session started as challenging, expert level stuff. And then went onto being just stupid for everyone. After 45min, decided to take a break, hoping something consistent would re-emerge. Instead, spent some quality time getting to know someone i have been sailing with for three years. I'll take it.

I jumped in first after lunch with my 5m and proved too small for my skills. Switched to 6m and was pretty happy for most the 1st sesh until the winds increased was often OP'd. 6m was nice for the weird wind and tidal current combo that made foiling a challenge. Switched to 5m for the 2nd sesh and felt much more appropriate. The increased wind let me lift better in the mogul swell conditions. Fun to be out with the OGs and the elite riders with bevies in the end. Luckily called it just before the winds lull ... (more)

Of course just in time for the wind to tank, didn't even get foiling. Thanks for bevy'g Danno! I tried to do a lot of turns and focused on wave positioning today, trying to stay on the top 1/3 of a wave face throughout a maneuver. When I get it right and drag it out a bit I'm always amazed at how long I stay on foil without the wing. The 1080 and its crazy low stall speed helps a lot. I ventured west of Clover briefly and got swallowed by a Pit of Despair - refracting/reflecting waves and current off the point created an absolute mess - eventually got spat back out in the direction of Ross Bay.

Early launch at a highish tide. Started with a 1 km wind shadow, so slogged out on my big stuff. Wind was steady further out and weeds were almost a non-issue but did clear my foil a few times. The 1350 felt surprisingly lively with the short fuse and small tail. Too much for the 7m further out at times, the 6m might have been the charm, yet would have stayed with the foil choice. I took a chance on RB after John's OSR. It was marginal, but I geared up in case the winds came up. I used my biggest gear and it soon got me foiling. There was some foilable stuff by Clover level and beyond with lots of confused medium-sized swell. I got about 30 min of decent power and some swell play. Then it reduced and became a great deal of work to stay up, Soon, John, Poper, Danno, and I were slogging. Good fun, regardless. 12-14 knots soon became 6-8 knots, so HighRocker, Danno, ColdSnap, Mike and I sloshed around for about 30 min before giving up and limping in. Then the wind came back so I relaunched with John and we had some fun in shifty winds until sunset. A nice two hrs from 12 to 2! REALLY windy. 30 km on the smallest foil and the three meter wing dialed in with the boom for the first time. Finally it feels balanced on the harness line. Gorge ready if I go. Forgot to stop the GPS watch at the end so no track. A high wind day; got it out of my system. Local smoke.

Good Pipers two session day with Paul, John, and the Colombian couple! 4m winds at the parking lot, 5m at the beach. Windsurfer came in to rig bigger due to lower wind. Went with 5m, but I quickly switched to 4m as winds increased. Not very fun gusts and holes inside. Nice swell/wind at the lagoon cliffs. 3ft confused swells further out with occasional holes. John rounding to form with his new KT and Paul working some of the swells by the marker. Not my fave PL day, but the personalities made it worth it.

Got on it right away but it was coming up fast, barely enough time for breakfast today, again seemed way too windy on 4.7, tough to keep it in the water. Gybe issues even worse, gotta be the foil, couldn't be me?? Right?

Not a satisfying session even after a couple attempts. Came clear out of the water on a couple turns, wayyy too much juice.

Day 1 wing really, maiden voyage 130l, knees on drive out, drive back. Not bad. 20m walk. Ditto & driving upwind. Not bad, no walk. A few more & tired, too windy & wavy. Tried to stand, made it on three tacks for seconds, better on port. End of day: really windy, tough kneeling so decided I better stand up. 4 min ride upwind apparently, kept foil down, no love coming back but better.

Warm!!! Nice spot, comox flat on one side of sandbar, choppy on the other side. Will try the Comox flat tomorrow. Felt weird to be on an inflatable 10m. Wed/Thu should be even stronger. Unbelievable that 98% of people are wearing long wetsuit, and a few shorty. No idea how they dont die from heatstroke. No wetsuit and had to "sink in" every 5-8 minutes to cool down.

    Aaaargh, equal parts fun/frustration.

Bigger swell, easing wind, some weed patches made for jekyll/hyde conditions.

One or two fun rides, but if you came off foil, restarting was way too much work.

Probably could have made the 6m work, but after a half hour or so, decided to call it instead.

More. Same location, similar ebbing mid-tide, similar side-off wind direction, and similar wind speed to yesterday. More wave, more turns, more rides, and more fun than yesterday! South swell started to pump just after I took to the water! It was a bit unsettled having travelled through the large west swell, but it was easy to catch and fun to work with! One junior shortboard surfer out that was just ripping! Great session to end the trip with!

Choppy, gusty on the way out, nice lines Hudsons to Finger Isl. I dusted the old harness out of the kit bag for those 2km reaches. More rope management to contend with but marked energy savings, felt more dialed in.
